Vulva Love
An imagery of the female sex made of fruits, seeds, flowers and galaxies.
Vulva Love is a project I worked on between 2014 and 2017, one that gradually settled, both conceptually and formally, over time.
At first I wanted to create an imagery around the female sex, free of any stereotype, relating it to natural forms and elements: fruits, seeds, flowers. I worked with watercolour and ink in an abstract language. In other pieces the cosmos appeared, micro-universes, galaxies, as a symbol of the mystery of female sexuality.
Over the years, the most interesting thing was seeing how the work opened up spaces to talk about our bodies, which, as women, have been silenced and kept away from pleasure for millennia. What is not named does not exist, and naming is also representing. Representing with a loving gaze towards ourselves and towards our bodies.
From that same gaze came installation and performance pieces, with textile and weaving at their heart, and the book El placer es mío (Bridge Books, 2017). Offering symbolic images far from the heteropatriarchal gaze, and building our own visual language, makes us freer to inhabit our bodies and reconcile ourselves with our sexuality and the power that lives within it.
Exhibited in Castellón, Valencia, Barcelona, Alicante, Alboraia, Madrid and Logroño.
