An experimental action I created during the performance creation course of School of Performance Art, led by my friend, the artist Miguel Andrés, and presented in 2019 at Las Cigarreras (Alicante).

At that time I was going through a deep personal crisis that was pushing me to make important changes in my life. I wanted to represent, symbolically, the physical and emotional changes I had been living since the pregnancy and birth of my second child.

This photographic performance was conceived for the central pages of a still unpublished collection of poems, «Metamorphosis in Three Times», about the inner transformations that take place in a suspended space-time through the many facets of a woman-mother-artist, and about how acquired fears and limiting beliefs can shape the way we express ourselves.

Metamorphosis in three times

Wrapped in tulle fabrics embroidered with words (elements from the installation «Metamorphose»), a body-being could be seen throbbing, longing to come out into the world. The fears of being seen, recognised, judged, questioned surfaced in my naked body; only those thin layers of fabric separated my physicality from the audience. My maternal body, my breasts still full of milk, the «extra» kilos still settled under my skin after my second pregnancy held me back in a movement of action and inaction.

When butterflies leave the chrysalis, they must go through a period of uncertainty and physical effort similar to human birth. If anyone tried to cut the chrysalis open to help, the butterfly would die, because that painful passage is what pumps the blood into its wings so it can fly. In the same way, inner change only happens when the urge to «shed» one's skin comes from within, and we can turn our fears into opportunities.

Little by little my body was unveiled until I stood completely naked, body and soul, before the audience. Understanding and accepting that full exposure is only possible when there is total acceptance of who you are, with your light and your shadows.

Volar

To fly

Once the psychomagic act has reached the psyche, all that remains is to stand firm in the personal courage of having faced one's own limits, and to find the inner peace that comes when you leave your fears behind and bravely reach for your true Self. In 2022, three years after that performance-ritual, I returned to the idea of the photographs in a series of three images reflecting my inner state. In a way, it closed that passage through the recognition of my gifts and talents.

¡Vuela!

From the poetry collection «Metamorfosis en tres tiempos»

I began entering chrysalis mode in 2019, when the caterpillar had already fulfilled the tasks entrusted to her. On the surface, the safe, predictable and stable life every caterpillar aspires to. But inside, like a small inner revolution, a voice was whispering change. So many fears arise at that moment, when the call of the soul weighs more than the comfort zone, the tender green leaf where you sleep and feed.

But the inner tornado keeps gaining strength, and the caterpillar begins to spin silk, knowing there is no turning back. Once you enter nymph mode you don't know for how long, or what will happen. You let life pass through you and surrender to the flow of Gaia's energy, with her cycles and her wisdom, with your divine connection and your ancestral knowledge.

Perhaps no one notices that you are hidden under that silk, and one day, on waking, you feel that your energy has changed, and the sun outside invites you to kiss it. And you start making a little path, opening the shell, peeling away layers, bringing your warm, drowsy little body to the surface.

You don't yet know that you can fly, your wings are numb, and your new body feels strange to you. You need time to adapt, even the painful passage of knowing you will never return to the tender green leaf. The jolt is brutal, but just when you think you won't make it, you unfold your wings and, in the blink of an eye, take flight.

Your sight sharpens, your perspective widens, you no longer hide your wings or your graceful flight. All you care about is flying, playing, contemplating, learning and delighting in the nectar of flowers. Tomorrow matters little, when you can live in the present moment.

Fly!
